We invite you to a lecture by Dr Andrzej Gillmeister, Professor at the University of Zielona Góra, entitled ‘The Pagan Roots of Christmas’:
No religion sprang forth like Athena from the head of Zeus. All new religious movements arose within a specific social and cultural context. Christianity was no exception. I would like to reflect on the origins of Christmas and attempt to identify the borrowings, more or less direct, from pagan cults. The results of our inquiry may surprise us. Perhaps Christian festivals in antiquity were far more original than Robert Langdon, the protagonist of Dan Brown’s novel, claimed.
The event will once again take place in the Whispering Room – the Wine Cellar, 3 Sowińskiego Street, on 12 December at 5 pm.
Hot drinks and something sweet will be waiting for you there.
