Outdoor treasure hunt

We invite you to take part in the rural treasure hunt entitled “On the Świdnica Trail! A treasure hunt exploring the history and monuments of Świdnica”. This is an outdoor treasure hunt involving the discovery of monuments linked to the history of Świdnica.

The rural quest is the result of the project entitled “Intergenerational cycle rally in the footsteps of Świdnica’s monuments”, which was co-funded from the Świdnica Municipality budget as part of the municipality’s cooperation programme with non-governmental organisations. The quest was prepared by students of the Tourism and Recreation programme at the University of Zielona Góra (Aleksandra Dulat, Katarzyna Lotek, Jakub Mazur, Justyna Tchórz, Aleksandra Wójcik) under the supervision of Dr Agnieszka Gandecka.

Calligraphy

Another weekend is approaching, one we are forced to spend at home. Whilst streaming services have undoubtedly seen a significant rise in active users recently, we suggest returning to more traditional forms of relaxation and self-improvement, such as handwriting. Calligraphy is the art of aesthetic writing, with a history dating back to the very beginnings of writing. A beautiful example of this art in practice are the multi-coloured manuscripts created by medieval scribes.

However, the benefits of practising handwriting go beyond an aesthetically pleasing signature or legible notes. It is also an irreplaceable exercise for the brain, which improves memory, stimulates creativity and aids speech. That is why we have prepared a lettering template for you, which can serve as an introduction to practising calligraphy at home.

F. B. Wernher’s Plan

Świdnica possesses a relatively large number of historical sources that recount the town’s history. These include references from the so-called Głogów Register, the Avignon Document and Kuriositäten des schlesischen Adels. The town also has its own iconographic sources. These are primarily pen-and-ink drawings and the copperplate engravings by F. B. Wernher based on them, which were included in the publication “Topographia Seu Compendium Silesiae”, Pars V (1750–1800). They show Świdnica from the north: the Kittlitz Palace, part of Estate I, farm buildings, St Martin’s Church and the Protestant church, as well as the same palace from the south-east (southern gable), farm buildings and the Protestant church. Wernher created these illustrations during his travels through Silesia between 1744 and 1758. It seems that at that time, Estate I must have been at the height of its splendour.

It was Wernher’s colour plan depicting the site of our Museum that inspired the creation of a riddle for the observant. The attached illustration presents a bird’s-eye view of the Świdnica I estate in two versions (illustration no. 1 shows the original plan drawn by F. B. Wernher, whilst illustration no. 2 has been adapted by us). Spot the 20 differences between the images.
